Overview
The National Housing Council's (NHC) mandate is to further the housing policy and the National Housing Strategy by providing advice to the Minister, on its own initiative or at the request of the Minister. In doing so, the
NHC has identified different priorities since it was established and issued recommendations to the Minister which can be accessed here.
Our priority areas are:
Charting the Course for National Housing Strategy 2.0
This priority explores how Canada's next National Housing Strategy can respond to today's housing challenges, strengthen the Government of Canada's housing policy, and build the housing ecosystem Canada needs to restore affordability and tirelessly pursue the progressive realization of the right to housing.

Embracing A Human Rights-Based Approach To Housing
Our activities and advice are based on the key principles of a human-rights based approach to housing. This includes the principles of non-discrimination, inclusion, participation and accountability.
We are committed to engaging with those in greatest need, including people with lived or living experience of inadequate housing and homelessness to ensure their voices are heard by policymakers.
Our findings and recommendations will contribute to strengthening the National Housing Strategy and advancing the progressive realization of the right to adequate housing.
